Quarantine and health screening requirements
Investigators supplying mice from sources other than The Jackson Laboratory must submit a health report for veterinary approval prior to shipment.
Once mice arrive at our facility, they undergo quarantine and health screening prior to entry into the phenotyping laboratory. For health screening, anal tape impressions and fecal samples are collected from each mouse (for Pinworm testing) and blood samples (75 microliters of whole blood to yield ~30 microliters of serum) are obtained from 4 out of every 15 mice.
Fecal, tape, and serum samples are submitted to the Comparative Pathology Laboratory at UC Davis for testing. Mice are held in an isolator unit until serum serology and Pinworm test results are returned (usually in one week).
In order for mice to enter the Phenotyping Laboratory, fecal float and anal tape tests must be negative for Pinworms, and serology tests must be negative for the following agents: Ectromelia virus (agent causing mouse pox), Theiler's mouse encephalomyelitis virus (GDVII strain), Hantavirus (Hantaan virus), Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus, Minute virus of mice (MVM), Mouse hepatitis virus (MHV), Mouse parvovirus (MPV), Pneumonia virus of mice (PVM), Rotavirus (Epizootic diarrhea of infant mice [EDIM] virus), Sendai virus, Clostridium piliforme, Mycoplasma arthritidis, and Mycoplasma pulmonis. Mice that do not meet these criteria will be returned to the investigator.
