Compound evaluation services: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

Compound evaluation in collagen- and collagen antibody-induced arthritis mouse models, the most commonly used models of human rheumatoid arthritis.

Collagen antibody-induced arthritis in BALB/cJ (000651) mice. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) histological examination of an inflamed ankle joint with multifocal cartilage erosions accompanied by marked inflammatory infiltrates (right) compared to normal (left).

JAX® In Vivo Services RA Capabilities

Leverage the expertise of our PhD-level scientists to help identify preclinical compound efficacy. Our In Vivo Services group can design treatment regimens customized to suit the model and compound of interest. Compounds can be administered by the dosing route of your choice, and RA progression evaluated by clinical symptoms (paw edema and visual arthritis score), paw and ankle caliper measurements, and joint histopathology.

Comparison of RA Study Protocols

Collagen Antibody-Induced Arthritis Collagen-Induced Arthritis
  • Male or female mice approximately 10 weeks of age
  • Strain: BALB/cJ (000651) or C57BL/6J (000664)
  • Inject IV with antibody cocktail
  • 3 days later inject IP with LPS
  • Induction = 1-3 days
  • Project duration = 3 weeks
  • Lacks the collagen antibody development phase of the arthritis induction
  • Male or female mice approximately 10 weeks of age
  • Strain: DBA/1J (000670) or DBA/1LacJ (001140)
  • ID injections with type II collagen emulsified in CFA
  • ID booster injection 21 days later
  • IP LPS injection 5 days later
  • Induction = 2-3 weeks
  • Project duration = 15 weeks
