JAX® Embryo Cryopreservation Services

Speed embryo cryopreservation

Rapid cryopreservation of embryos from genetically engineered mice

Key benefits

  • Saves resources when colonies are not in use
  • Limits genetic drift and prevents spontaneous loss of phenotype
  • Protects valuable mouse strains against disasters
  • Facilitates quick recovery of specific and opportunistic pathogen-free (SOPF) mice
  • Typically completed four to six weeks after importation
  • Requires only three males
  • Facilitates strain distribution to fellow researchers

Details

  • Available for strains on C57BL/6J, FVB/NJ, DBA/2J, BALB/cByJ, or NOD/ShiLtJ backgrounds
  • At least 250 two-cell embryos/strain cryopreserved in 10 straws (25 embryos/straw)
  • Cryopreserved embryos are heterozygous (if homozygous males are supplied) or heterozygous and wild-type (if heterozygous males are supplied)
  • Quality control: systematic checks throughout cryopreservation process
    • Test thaws of control embryos
    • IVF of control embryos to validate the media and environmental conditions
    • Attempt to recover live born mice (except for strains on C57BL/6J backgrounds)
  • Embryos cryopreserved for five years in three tanks at two sites
  • Additional years of storage available for $175/strain/year

Custom embryo cryopreservation

For those strains that require homozygous cryopreservation

Key benefits

  • Preserves the inbred or homozygous characteristics of your mouse strain
  • Ideal for strains with multiple genetic mutations
  • Enables you to eliminate a colony when it is not under active study
  • Protects valuable mouse strains against loss due to disaster
  • Facilitates quick recovery of specific and opportunistic pathogen-free (SOPF) mice
  • Helps you distribute your strains to other researchers

Details

  • Best suited for inbreds, homozygotes, or strains with multiple genetic mutations
  • Total number of embryos cryopreserved determined by a test cryopreservation and recovery
  • Typical timeframe of four to six months
  • Requires four to six males and six to ten females from your colony
